Kyung-Wook Jee, PhD, and Thomas Bortfeld, PhD, edited the special issue Advanced Topics in Particle Radiotherapy for the IEEE Transactions on Radiation and Plasma Medical Sciences (TRPMS). This journal was recently launched by the Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society (NPSS) with the intention of connecting the larger and well-established field of radiation medical applications with the upcoming plasma medical sciences domain.

Abstract: Research and developmental works that are at the forefront of particle radiotherapy (pRT) investigations are collected and presented in this special issue. While the field of pRT itself is broad and expanding, the scope was narrowed into seven subfields that are representative of recent advances investigated by medical physics communities. These topics are: ultrahigh dose rate (FLASH) particle therapy; online adaptive particle therapy; MR-particle RT systems; compact, affordable, and accessible particle RT systems; range uncertainty reduction; range verification; and artificial intelligence in particle therapy . In this editorial, readers will find the editors’ visionary perspectives commenting on present activities and future research directions of each of these subfields as well as a synopsis of each of the pertained published articles in the issue.
