Carbon ions have been used for more than two decades for cancer treatments in Japan and Europe and recently an agreement was signed between Mayo Clinic Florida and Hitachi that will bring Carbon therapy to the United States. The facility will house traditional photon therapy, proton therapy, and carbon therapy on the same clinical floor. The carbon treatment room will be capable of treating both proton and carbon ions within one treatment field. In addition to the particle facility, we will also survey the radiobiological computational models currently used in the clinic along with in-vivo biological data.
