As scientists, we think of ourselves as objective, making decisions based on impartial evaluation of facts. But there is an increasing body of literature showing evidence of implicit bias and stereotyping even among scientists that colors the decisions we think are purely based on facts. I am not an expert in the subject, but I will present the concepts of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), review some of the recent findings on EDI relating to the field of medical physics, and talk about initiatives to support EDI. The goal of this seminar is to demonstrate that improving EDI strengthens a group in many ways, and that everyone in the group contributes to creating an inclusive culture that appreciates and supports diversity.
