Alejandro Bertolet (MGH): LET-based outcome analysis for proton therapy and application to proton monoenergetic arc therapy
Tuesday 12 January 2021, 12:00pm - 01:00pm

Elevated Linear Energy Transfer (LET) has been related to an increased relative biological effectiveness (RBE) in in vitro studies with proton beams. However, more studies to assess the impact of LET on clinical outcomes are still needed. This talk presents: (a) the concept of LET and an analytical method to calculate it; (b) a study of the correlation between LET values and after-treatment MRI changes on meningioma patients treated with protons; and (c) a potential application of the LET-based enhanced RBE: proton arc monoenergetic therapy (PMAT).

Short bio:

Alejandro Bertolet is a Spanish board-certified medical physicist and a postdoctoral fellow in the Paganetti’s lab at the MGH. After completing his residency in the Hospital Virgen Macarena in Seville (Spain), he joined the Dr. Alejandro Carabe’s lab at the University of Pennsylvania while completing his PhD degree in the University of Sevilla. During his stay at the University of Pennsylvania, he worked on biophysics of proton radiotherapy, particularly on microdosimetry. He also conducted several works about the influence of LET in proton radiotherapy, which he will be presenting during this talk.
