The current brachytherapy clinical practice has not been significantly changed for decades. The brachytherapy community is witnessing incremental updates of commercial treatment planning systems, applicators and treatment delivery systems; however, these improvements often do not follow numerous requests for improved quality in brachytherapy treatments, implementation of novel imaging modalities, cross-platform usability, rapid computing, and improved economy of hospital resources. This presentation shows some of the latest research efforts and the clinical implementation of advanced brachytherapy techniques, including instantaneous generation of complex treatment plans, real-time adaptive planning, development of applicators, MRI-only localization of the catheters, and feedforward adaptive inverse planning.
